Funding and Acquisitions Roundup: MessageMe closes a $10M Series A round to compete in the enhanced mobile messaging market

Today’s early-stage startup funding and acquisitions news:

MessageMe, a mobile messaging app that allows enhanced messaging and competes with popular apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, has closed a $10 million Series A round. The startup, which launched in 2012, previously raised Seed and Venture Rounds totaling $1.9 million. Investors in the Series A include Greylock Partners and John Lilly. CrowdOptic, a mobile app that allows users to identify where people are pointing their smartphone cameras and make social connections based on their shared photographic interests, has landed $1 million in a new round of Venture Funding. Investors include Silicon Valley Bank and Angel investor, former Oracle president and COO, and Kleiner Perkins Partner Emeritus Ray Lane. The San Francisco-based startup has raised $3.5 million to date, including a Series A round in 2011 that was its first institutional round. Here’s more on the new funding, from TechCrunch.

Enterprise location-based mobile software startup Meridian has been acquired by Aruba Networks—the big enterprise mobile network access provider. Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed. Portland, Oregon-based Meridian was founded in the spring of 2011 and raised $1 million in Seed funding later that same year. Here’s the acquisition announcement from the companies.
