Shoppers Food & Pharmacy to Combat Bottom-of-Basket Loss with Evolution Robotics Retail
1/16/07 - Pasadena-based Evolution Robotics Retail, a leading provider of robotic, vision-based solutions to the retail industry, and Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, a division of SUPERVALU, announced today that the chain will deploy Evolution Robotics Retail's LaneHawk Visual Scanner in six area stores to combat bottom-of-basket (BOB) loss.
“BOB shrink is a problem grocery retailers have tried to combat for years, with pretty limited results,” said Kurt Schertle, senior vice president of merchandising for Shoppers Food & Pharmacy. “We have been testing LaneHawk extensively, and are very impressed by the results. LaneHawk is the first product we have found that actually works in reducing BOB loss.”
According to Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, until now, most efforts to reduce BOB loss have depended on cashiers visually checking the bottom of customers' carts – using mirrors, stickers, training or other detection devices – and then manually scanning those items. With current pressure to increase checkout productivity, it is difficult for cashiers to check for BOB items consistently. Using its patented visual pattern recognition technology, LaneHawk is able to detect, identify, and present BOB items directly to the point of sale, enabling cashiers to add those items directly to the transaction.
The six stores will begin implementation in first quarter 2007.
