Helio Shuts Down EVDO/Wi-Fi Service
4/25/07 –Los Angeles-based mobile phone startup Helio has decided to discontinue its EVDO/wi-fi hybrid service. The service combined 3G mobile technology with access to wi-fi hotspots for people with laptops that needed mobile connections in more places.
The move is no doubt an attempt to streamline and consolidate operations, after serious questions have been raised over the past quarter about the company’s long-term viability. It will be interesting to see the latest financial numbers on Helio tomorrow, when EarthLink, a joint investor in the company with South Korea’s SK Telecom, releases earnings.
