Demand Media Adds Video Content Business with Acquisition of ExpertVillage.com
6/12/07 – Demand Media, the Santa Monica-based online social media company, today announced the acquisition of ExpertVillage.com, a web site that provides professional “how-to” videos filmed and produced by local filmmakers that feature experts on a broad range of topics. Demand says the acquisition significantly expands its social media platform with a library of diverse video content to be distributed across its network of niche web properties.
ExpertVillage, launched with video in 2006, is a video portal for how-to information and the largest provider of “made for the Internet” video content, according to the company. ExpertVillage says it gives filmmakers a proprietary process that allows the selection of specific how-to topics and production of videos on that subject matter.
Demand says the acquisition gives it instant access to a marketplace of hundreds of filmmakers who are eager to produce instructional videos through ExpertVillage’s platform. The company also owns eHow.com, a site that aggregates “how-to” articles from experts.
ExpertVillage is owned by Austin, Texas-based PageWise. The terms of the deal were not divulged.
Demand Media was founded in May 2006 by former MySpace.com chairman Richard Rosenblatt. Demand and its fully-owned subsidiary eNom recently released its ME.tv domain and online video product. The company also owns a number of web content properties including Answerbag.com and eHow.
