Helio to Launch Enhanced 'UP' Service

6/29/07 – CrunchGear is reporting today that Westwood-based mobile telephony company Helio will announce an upgrade to its UP service next week.  The move coincides, of course, with the launch of Apple’s iPhone, which may prove to be Helio’s greatest challenge to date.

The UP service, to this point, has been a simple online storage service for photos and video taken by Helio members with their mobile devices.  CrunchGear reports the upgrade will allow users to upload photos from their devices directly to their Flickr accounts and send video straight to You Tube.

Helio, a mobile virtual network operator, has positioned itself to offer unique services that appeal to the youth market, a group that may be priced out of the iPhone phenomenon, and these new UP features only serve to strengthen that position.  The company’s recently-released Ocean dual slider smartphone has been widely lauded as a potential competitor to Apple’s latest game changer.

Helio was established by EarthLink and Boingo founder Sky Dayton, and is a joint investment of EarthLink and South Korea’s SK Telecom.
