Travel Social Network TripUp Acquired by SideStep

7/10/07 – Travel social network TripUp, based in Los Angeles, has been purchased by Santa Clara-based SideStep.  The companies have not revealed the financial terms of the deal.

TripUp came up with a number of social tools for travel enthusiasts, including Trip Gurus, which allows travelers to give and receive advice, meet up with fellow travelers, and hook up with locals.  The site also includes user-generated travel blogs, photos, videos, maps and reviews.

SideStep describes itself as a “travel search engine” and allows users to use its travel aggregation technology to search for flights, hotels, etc.  The company claims it has more than 6 million monthly visitors.

No word yet on whether or not the TripUp L.A. office will remain open.

Update: A SideStep spokesperson has told StartUp Beat that TripUp will now be headquarted in Santa Clara, and the L.A. office will be closed.
