Boingo Wireless Enters Into Partnership with Broadcom

1/10/08 – Boingo Wireless, the Santa Monica-based wi-fi hotspot network operator, and Irvine’s Broadcom Corporation have partnered up to enable wireless network connections for wi-fi phone users.  Broadcom manufactures semiconductors for both wired and wireless communications devices.

As part of the relationship, the companies say that Broadcom will incorporate Boingo’s wi-fi client software for handsets into its widely deployed wi-fi phone chipset platform currently shipping to handset manufacturers worldwide.  Boingo’s wi-fi client software automatically scans for hotspots and instantly connects users to private and commercial networks, including tens of thousands of hotspots that are part of Boingo’s worldwide roaming network.

The companies also say that Broadcom has been conducting live voice-over-IP demonstrations with Boingo at the Consumer Electronics Show this week.

Boingo was founded in 2001 by EarthLink and Helio founder Sky Dayton.
