Geni Bids to Become ‘Digital Scrapbook’ for Families

1/7/08 – Los Angeles-based Geni.com, the highly-touted genealogy web site, has launched two new major features that it says add to the collaborative nature of the service.  Geni has been wildly popular since its launch last January, reaching the 5 million user profiles milestone within seven months.

The new Timeline feature shows a visual history of the events in a person’s life, with each event having its own page that can contain additional information, photos, attendees, and comments.  When an attendee is added to an event, the event appears in their timeline too.  Geni says that in the process of building their own timeline, users are likely to help complete the timelines of other family members, and compares the service to online scrapbooking.

The other new feature is Family News, which Geni says is a single page where users can track everything going on in their family, including additions to the family tree and timelines, birthdays, photos, discussions, comments, and more.

Geni was launched by David Sacks, former COO of PayPal and producer of the film “Thank You for Smoking.”  Its investors include Founders Fund and Charles River Ventures.
