Southwest Airlines to Test Row 44 In-Flight Broadband

1/24/08 – Westlake Village-based Row 44 and Southwest Airlines announced this week that it will test Row 44’s service on four of its aircraft this summer.  This will make Southwest the first U.S. carrier to test satellite-delivered broadband Internet access on multiple aircraft.

Row 44, which uses the Hughes satellite network, is also working with Alaska Airlines to implement an in-flight system.

The service enables fliers with wi-fi enabled devices to connect to the system through wireless hotspots installed inside the aircraft cabin, enabled by a light-weight radome mounted on top of the aircraft that houses an antenna, which receives and transmits signals, according to Row 44.

Row 44 has been privately funded to this point.
