Row44 Hopes to Bring ‘True’ Broadband to Air Travel

7/25/07 – Row44 is an interesting startup based in Westlake Village that hopes to bring broadband Internet service to airliners.  The concept has been attempted before to a limited extent by Boeing, but after the shutdown of that service, Row44 is taking its shot at the market.  The company is using the Hughes satellite network to offer a full plate of in-flight services that includes broadband Internet and live IP-based TV.

MusicPlusTV Seeks to Create Next Generation Music TV Network

Axiom Microdevices Seeks to Reduce Costs and Increase Efficiency for Cell Phone Makers

4/12/07 – A company that has recently appeared on StartUp Beat’s radar is Irvine-based Axiom Microdevices, a business built upon technology developed at CalTech that provides fully integrated power amplifiers for the cell phone market.  Founded in 2002, Axiom uses commodity complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) processes to create cost reduction and integration for cell phone manufacturers.

Fonality Sets Sights on SMB Telephony Market

3/1/07 – February was a busy month for Culver City-based Fonality, with the completion of a $7 million round of funding led by Intel Capital, and the release of a new version of its business-class phone system product, PBXtra.

Founded in 2003, Fonality targets the small and medium size business (SMB) market with a lower-cost alternative to traditional private branch exchange, or PBX, business phone systems.  It now claims to serve more than 1,600 business customers with 40,000 individual users worldwide.

Fonality CEO Chris Lyman makes it clear that the SMB market is Fonality’s prime target.

“The low end of the market is enormous and has been completely ignored by large, established companies,” said Lyman.  “Their products are too complex for smaller companies, and the prices are ridiculous.  We’re in step with companies with two-to-500 employees who want affordable products with all the features required to support their modern workplace.”
