Drone cleaning is moving toward equipment subscription models

Commercial cleaning technology is entering a period where access to equipment can matter as much as the equipment itself.

For entrepreneurs looking to enter drone based exterior cleaning, purchasing a commercial aircraft outright can require significant capital before a single customer has been acquired. Subscription models offer a different approach, allowing operators to access specialized equipment while preserving more capital for building the business around it.

The broader robotics market is already moving in this direction. The International Federation of Robotics reported that the global robot as a service fleet grew 31% in 2024 to more than 24,500 units. The organization said businesses are increasingly choosing subscription or rental agreements to introduce automation without making a heavy upfront investment.

The model is particularly relevant for commercial cleaning, where equipment represents only part of the cost of building an operation. Operators also need training, insurance, ground equipment, crews, maintenance and customer acquisition. A subscription can therefore become a way to spread the cost of the technology while keeping resources available for the rest of the business.

SkyPSI offers a supported Operator program built around a fixed monthly subscription rather than requiring entrepreneurs to purchase a commercial cleaning drone outright. The public starting price is $3,000 per month and includes access to the Apellix Power Wash B2 flight kit, training and front line support.

The B2 is designed for commercial exterior cleaning, with published capabilities of up to 32 minutes of flight time and up to 195 feet of reach. SkyPSI lists windows, pressure washing and other exterior cleaning applications as part of the system’s commercial use cases. The operator provides the ground operation, crew and customer development around the aircraft.

The subscription is also structured around more than equipment access. SkyPSI includes commercial cleaning training, ongoing support and marketing guidance, while qualified operators receive one guaranteed paid commercial cleaning job after qualification. The company says operators retain their own brand and independently sourced customer accounts, creating a model that combines equipment access with a broader business support layer.
