Generative AI is creating new challenges for scientific publishers as synthetic and manipulated images become harder to distinguish from legitimate research material.

Straive and Imagetwin are targeting that problem with a new strategic partnership that brings image integrity screening directly into publishers’ existing editorial workflows.

Announced September 23, the partnership integrates Imagetwin’s image analysis software with Straive’s aiKira Editorial Desk API. The combined solution is designed to screen submissions for manipulated, duplicated, plagiarized, and AI-generated visuals before they move further through the publishing pipeline.

The integration expands aiKira’s existing automated screening capabilities, which include more than 20 integrity checks covering areas such as authorship, journal scope, reference verification, and text.

In a pilot study, Straive said the combined solution identified 98% of image integrity issues, including known manipulated images and AI-generated figures. The companies did not disclose further details about the pilot in the announcement.

The partnership comes as scientific publishing faces a growing need to identify research integrity issues earlier in the editorial process.

According to the companies, generative AI and GAN-generated figures can produce fake data capable of bypassing some traditional detection tools. When an issue is discovered only after publication, investigating and correcting the research record can become a slower and more costly process.

“Research integrity is at a breaking point, and this partnership directly answers this ever-growing challenge. Together, we’re empowering publishers to not only uphold the credibility of the scientific record at scale, but get ahead of fraud thanks to the technological breakthroughs we’re achieving,” said Srinivasan Govindarajan, Business Head, Science & Research at Straive.

The integration is intended to make image analysis part of the same workflow publishers already use to evaluate other aspects of a submission, rather than requiring a separate forensic process.

Imagetwin’s platform is designed to detect image duplication, manipulation, plagiarism, and AI-generated content. The company says its database contains more than 160 million academic images.

For Patrick Starke, Co-Founder and CEO of Imagetwin, the timing of detection is central to the partnership.

“The earlier an integrity issue is found, the easier and less damaging it is to fix. Partnering with Straive lets us put image integrity screening directly into publishers’ existing workflows through aiKira, so integrity checks happen automatically, at scale, before problems reach peer review,” said Starke.

Straive provides data and AI solutions for organizations across industries including science and research, while Imagetwin focuses specifically on image integrity in academic publishing. The partnership brings the two capabilities together at an earlier stage of the publication process.

For publishers, the goal is to identify potential integrity problems before manuscripts reach peer review, when issues may be easier to investigate and address.

As generative AI continues to expand the ability to create and manipulate scientific visuals, image screening is becoming another layer in the publishing infrastructure. The Straive and Imagetwin partnership is aimed at putting that layer directly into the workflow rather than waiting for problems to surface after publication.
