Microsoft Fabric is turning data migration into a modernization decision

Enterprise data teams are increasingly being asked to modernize aging data environments without disrupting the systems that already support reporting, analytics and daily operations.

That makes migration more complicated than moving information from one platform to another. Organizations also need to rethink data pipelines, governance, analytics workloads and the infrastructure needed for AI.

Microsoft is positioning Fabric as a unified platform for data management, analytics and AI, while its partner ecosystem increasingly includes specialists in data warehouse migrations and Fabric deployments. Microsoft specifically identifies migration and analytics expertise as areas where qualified partners can support organizations moving to Fabric.

The shift is particularly relevant for companies still operating fragmented environments built around legacy ETL tools. Consolidating those workloads can reduce the number of platforms that data teams need to manage while creating a more consistent foundation for analytics and AI.

Sonata Software has built a significant part of its Microsoft practice around this transition. The company has worked with Microsoft for more than 30 years and participated in the private preview of Fabric in 2022, before expanding its work into analytics and becoming a Solutions Partner for Data & AI. Microsoft has also highlighted Sonata’s development of Fabric solutions and its availability through AppSource.

Its current migration portfolio includes moving workloads from Informatica to Microsoft Fabric, as well as Synapse to Fabric. Sonata’s Informatica migration offering uses automated discovery, assessment and conversion tools before moving data pipelines, models and BI workloads into Fabric and OneLake. The company says the approach can reduce total cost of ownership by about 40% and accelerate time to insight by 15–25%.

Sonata also offers a Synapse migration accelerator designed to simplify the transition to Fabric, with a focus on cost optimization, unified governance and AI enabled analytics. Its published case material cites 30–40% lower engineering TCO and 30% faster time to market in a Synapse to Fabric modernization scenario.
