Helio to Launch Enhanced 'UP' Service

6/29/07 – CrunchGear is reporting today that Westwood-based mobile telephony company Helio will announce an upgrade to its UP service next week.  The move coincides, of course, with the launch of Apple’s iPhone, which may prove to be Helio’s greatest challenge to date.

The UP service, to this point, has been a simple online storage service for photos and video taken by Helio members with their mobile devices.  CrunchGear reports the upgrade will allow users to upload photos from their devices directly to their Flickr accounts and send video straight to You Tube.

Helio, a mobile virtual network operator, has positioned itself to offer unique services that appeal to the youth market, a group that may be priced out of the iPhone phenomenon, and these new UP features only serve to strengthen that position.  The company’s recently-released Ocean dual slider smartphone has been widely lauded as a potential competitor to Apple’s latest game changer.

Helio was established by EarthLink and Boingo founder Sky Dayton, and is a joint investment of EarthLink and South Korea’s SK Telecom.

Language Weaver Signs German Reseller

6/29/07 – Language Weaver, the Los Angeles-based developer of software for automatic language translation, and Germany’s pi-consult across Solutions have signed a reseller and technology integration agreement.  Pi-consult is a certified reseller of language translation solutions company across Systems, which already has a partnership in place with Language Weaver.

Pi-consult will resell Language Weaver’s statistical machine translation technology integrated with across’s Language Server product, which includes a translation memory and terminology system as well as tools for project and workflow management.

Language Weaver says its statistical machine translation software offers an established solution and a departure from traditional complex, linguistics rule-based machine translation by producing fluent, natural sounding translations based on what it calls “statistical likelihoods.”  It is currently available for translation of 31 languages.

The software is able to learn automatically from existing translated documents to produce what Language Weaver calls the “highest probability translation output,” potentially saving customers time and money by automating the process of translating new documents, according to Language Weaver.

The company was founded in 2002 and is based on research and development done at the University of Southern California’s Information Sciences Institute.  It claims it has more than 50 patents pending on its technology.  The company also operates a subsidiary user-generated news web site, called Kontrib, which uses Language Weaver’s technology to automatically translate stories that are originally posted in multiple languages.

Interneer Awarded Patent for Instant Application Platform

6/27/07 – Los Angeles-based Interneer, creator of the Instant Application Platform, or IAP, which it says allows companies to configure web-based applications with integrated workflow without programming, said today it has been awarded a U.S. patent for its technology.

The patent, entitled “Knowledge Management System and Method,” defines the IAP as a knowledge management system that automatically determines the manner in which to capture data as it is initially entered, ensuring all corresponding data will be captured in the same format in the future.  This methodology provides a structure for creating user-defined workflows, templates and tables built upon stored and collected data, according to Interneer.

The company says that using its IAP, businesses can design, configure and deploy scalable, reliable solutions through an intuitive point and click environment, hosted online or installed on-site, allowing application and workflow processes to be configured without supplementary tools or products.

Earlier this month, Interneer announced that it had received an investment of $2 million from GroundWork Equity.  At the same time, GroundWork’s founding and managing partner Michael Edell was named CEO.

Bid4Spots Gives Public Support to Internet Radio Broadcasters

6/26/07 – Encino-based Bid4Spots, the online auction of radio advertising time, has taken a public stand “in solidarity” with Internet broadcasters as part of the industry’s response to the threat to Internet radio due to royalty rate increases set by the Copyright Royalty Board.  Today has been designated by Internet broadcasters as a “Day of Silence,” designed to call attention to the fact that as a result of the Board’s action, royalties for Internet broadcasters are scheduled to move from a per-song rate to a per-listener rate starting July 15th, significantly increasing costs for online broadcasters.

Major Internet stations like Yahoo! LAUNCHcast, Rhapsody, and Pandora.com are expected to silence their streams today along with other participants like KCRW, Live365, MTV Online, Radioio, Radio Paradise, AccuRadio and independent online broadcasters.

In a statement, Bid4Spots CEO Dave Newmark said: “Although Bid4Spots doesn’t have a stream to silence, we want the industry to know we stand with the broadcasters in their fight to save Internet radio.  As a business we’re looking forward to getting this issue resolved, so we can all get back to what we like to do – which, for us, is helping broadcasters generate advertising revenue.”

Besides being an important issue for Bid4Spots’ business, as the company conducts auctions for both offline and online broadcasting, Newmark and his staff are bona fide radio industry veterans.  In fact, the company says that Rockie Thomas, who manages Bid4Spots’ Internet Radio division, is an independent broadcaster and will be participating by silencing her stream today.

Amp’d Mobile’s Lifeline Extended

6/22/07 – Amp’d Mobile will be allowed to use $7.5 million in cash collateral from Verizon Wireless to keep its mobile virtual network provider, or MVNO, phone service running, a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge ruled this week.

The judge’s sign off allows Amp’d to keep the service running through June 25.  The ruling requires Amp’d Mobile to set aside $2.45 million as a reserve, to be used only with Verizon’s written approval.

Verizon had originally demanded payment from Amp’d for its mobile network services on the threat of a shutdown just before Amp’d filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy.  Reports indicate that Amp’d owes Verizon about $33 million.

As a result, Amp’d has filed suit against Verizon Wireless, seeking a court order that bars the company from terminating Amp’d from its network.

Reports have circulated widely of overspending at Amp’d, which had raised around $360 million in venture funding, leading up to its bankruptcy.  Founder and CEO Peter Adderton left the company in the wake of the filing.

LogicalApps Turns Sarbanes-Oxley Challenges into Opportunity

6/15/07 – Sarbanes-Oxley requirements have created challenges for companies of all types and LogicalApps logosizes.  And the management team at Irvine-based LogicalApps has turned those challenges into opportunity in helping companies automate the process of Sarbanes-Oxley, or SOX, compliance.

LogicalApps provides solutions that help companies automate the checks and balances that take place in organizations to ensure that business transactions and financial reports are accurate, meet corporate policies and adhere to government regulations.

According to Chris Capdevila, co-founder and current vice president of strategy and corporate development, LogicalApps was not originally started to address Sarbanes-Oxley specifically, but as corporate scandals like Enron and WorldCom unfolded, the demand for greater regulatory oversight grew exponentially, and the company’s evolution followed suit.

“I spent eight years helping companies to rip out custom financial applications that they spent millions of dollars on and that fit their business perfectly but they couldn’t scale,” said Capdevila, formerly a senior consultant at Price Waterhouse.  “So they were replaced with commercial ERP (enterprise resource planning) applications that could handle massive workloads but couldn’t support their business processes without extensive customization.  For all the functionality they had gained, they lost a lot of flexibility and control.”

Capdevila says that he and co-founder Paul Brunskow, saw this problem as a glaring hole in the ERP market and in 2000 established LogicalApps to address it.  Since then, Capdevila and team have adapted to changing markets and established a solid business in an industry with huge growth potential.

John Hagerty, vice president and research fellow at AMR Research, says that the company has established a strong foundation for future growth, due to the two-pronged approach of its flagship ACTIVE Governance software.

“When LogicalApps originally introduced the ACTIVE Governance solution, it was significantly out in front of other vendors in the market because it was one of the first to deliver both a framework for scope of work as well as active monitory of security and process in one package,” said Hagerty.  “Others have followed this path now, but LogicalApps’ execution is more mature.”

The company targets its marketing efforts to what it sees as the four key constituencies within an organization—internal audit, finance, IT and the chief compliance, or risk, office.

“Our marketing efforts are targeted to those four stakeholders, each of which shares a common goal to ensure that corporate and regulatory guidelines are being followed with the least possible burden to the business,” said Carla Fitzgerald, senior vice president of marketing.  “There are a variety of industry events focused on compliance and risk, which we participate in as presenters and sponsors, and we also use vehicles such as webinars and seminars to educate the market on the value of embedding policy enforcement into their core business systems.”

The strategy seems to be working.  LogicalApps currently counts more than 300 customers, which break down roughly as 60 percent public companies, 30 percent private and 10 percent government agencies, according to CEO Jim Zierick, who joined the firm in February.

“We’ve seen that our solution is embraced by large organizations such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Qualcomm, Visa and Fidelity National Financial, to name a few, as well as smaller organizations who really appreciate that they are able to derive business value from automating their governance initiatives,” said Zierick.

The company’s success has not gone unnoticed.  In 2005, LogicalApps received the “Emerging Star” designation in the Deloitte & Touche Technology Fast 50 program, and Capdevila was named "Software Entrepreneur of the Year" by the Software Council of Southern California in the same year.

A key ongoing challenge for the company is to overcome the “let’s wait” option with potential clients or companies that either try to manage their compliance programs through inefficient office productivity tools like Excel and Word or simply suffer from institutional inertia.  In addition, the company cites competition in the governance, risk and compliance, or GRC, market that comes not only from other smaller providers, but from the risk advisors with whom they partner.

But Capdevila sees opportunity in this situation.  “A significant element of our marketing strategy is to partner with them—companies such as Price Waterhouse Coopers, KPMG, Ernst & Young—to expose the advantages of automation to our target audience,” he said.  “These firms are building extensive practices around GRC, helping companies to improve business processes while meeting their compliance requirements, and they are often contracted to evaluate and implement automated solutions for GRC on behalf of the customers.”

Capdevila says that almost every leading risk advisory firm has identified LogicalApps as a premier offering for the Oracle market and are sending consultants at the rate of 30-to-40 per quarter to get trained on the company’s ACTIVE Governance software.

LogicalApps is backed by Sequoia Capital and Mission Ventures.

Amp’d Mobile Founder’s High-Flying Commute

6/15/07 – As we gain some distance from Los Angeles-based Amp’d Mobile’s sudden bankruptcy announcement two weeks ago, answers are emerging as to why the company that raised $360 million in funding over the last two years ran out of money.

Silicon Valley rumor blog Valleywag provides the latest evidence that the bankruptcy may have had more to do with simple financial mismanagement and less to do with a flawed business model, reporting that founder and now-former-CEO Peter Adderton used to commute via private helicopter from Orange County to Amp’d’s Los Angeles headquarters—paid for by the company.

While Valleywag reports “rumors,” the site has been spot on with the Amp’d story, and was the first to report on the cash crunch that led to the chapter 11 filing, as well as the imminent departure of Adderton.

Assuming that the report is indeed accurate, when combined with already established facts like nearly half its customer base being delinquent on their bills, a picture emerges of a company that operates in a relatively difficult and cash-intensive sector that also badly managed its funds.

This may be good news for other MVNOs, like Amp’d’s Los Angeles-based counterpart Helio, in terms of perception of the often criticized business model and helping to alleviate customer hesitation to sign up with an MVNO.

Calacanis says that contributors also have the option of passing on the payment and having Mahalo donate their fees to the Wikimedia Foundation.  He says the company has earmarked up to $250,000 for donations.

Adderton Leaves Amp’d Mobile

6/13/07 – Telephony’s Wireless Review reports that a spokeswoman has confirmed that Amp’d Mobile founder and CEO Peter Adderton has left the company.  This follows on the heels of Amp’d’s chapter 11 filing last week.

According to the report, no interim CEO has been selected yet and the company’s senior management will continue to run the company for the time being.  It also said that Adderton would remain on the company’s board while it navigates chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Amp’d’s chapter 11 filing has left in its wake numerous questions about the viability of the mobile virtual network operator, or MVNO, business model—where a company uses the wireless services of a mobile operator like Verizon Wireless and builds a specialized service on top of the basic service.  In Amp’d’s case, it was content geared to the youth market.  There has been some speculation that Amp’d could ultimately emerge scaled down as a mobile content provider.

Amp’d and Westwood-based Helio, a joint venture of Internet service provider EarthLink and South Korea’s SK Telecom, are perhaps the most well-known MVNOs.  Helio has taken a somewhat different approach than Amp’d by building and customizing its own devices.  It has received a boost lately through the considerable buzz generated by the company’s Ocean dual-slider phone and data device.

Equilink Seeks to Become the Google of the Equestrian World

6/13/07 – An interesting niche search startup has launched out of Alhambra, in close proximity to the world-famous Santa Anita race track.  Equilink, which bills itself as the “Horse Google,” is a search engine and resource site for all things related to horses and the equestrian world.

The site was started by Barbara Summers, an equestrian enthusiast and former marketing executive who says the idea came to her after she tried to use Google and Yahoo to find new riding trainers and got “worthless results.”

Equilink allows searchers to find information in multiple categories and in specific geographical areas.  The database is proprietary, and is both searchable and organized as a directory.  The site also incorporates customization features, like the ability to choose color schemes.

The startup has been funded entirely to this point by Summers, who sees a considerable market opportunity.  She told StartUp Beat that the equestrian market has a total direct and indirect impact of $112 billion annually in the U.S.  “Horse owners as a group probably spend a higher percentage of their income on this sport than virtually any other recreational niche,” said Summers.

Demand Media Adds Video Content Business with Acquisition of ExpertVillage.com

6/12/07 – Demand Media, the Santa Monica-based online social media company, today announced the acquisition of ExpertVillage.com, a web site that provides professional “how-to” videos filmed and produced by local filmmakers that feature experts on a broad range of topics.  Demand says the acquisition significantly expands its social media platform with a library of diverse video content to be distributed across its network of niche web properties.

ExpertVillage, launched with video in 2006, is a video portal for how-to information and the largest provider of “made for the Internet” video content, according to the company.  ExpertVillage says it gives filmmakers a proprietary process that allows the selection of specific how-to topics and production of videos on that subject matter.

Demand says the acquisition gives it instant access to a marketplace of hundreds of filmmakers who are eager to produce instructional videos through ExpertVillage’s platform.  The company also owns eHow.com, a site that aggregates “how-to” articles from experts.

ExpertVillage is owned by Austin, Texas-based PageWise.  The terms of the deal were not divulged.

Demand Media was founded in May 2006 by former MySpace.com chairman Richard Rosenblatt.  Demand and its fully-owned subsidiary eNom recently released its ME.tv domain and online video product.  The company also owns a number of web content properties including Answerbag.com and eHow.

Can Amp’d Mobile Survive?

6/8/07 – The story of Los Angeles-based mobile virtual network operator Amp’d Mobile, its chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, and its prospects for survival, is slowly trickling out.  It seems that in the wake of the filing, Amp’d had a surprisingly lenient collections policy, as publications like RCR Wireless News are reporting that according to the bankruptcy filing, nearly half of Amp’d subscribers were “non-paying customers” due to “a host of credit and collections problems that contributed ultimately to a liquidity crisis.”

It also appears that Amp’d was behind on its payments to Verizon Wireless, which provided network capacity for Amp’d, and Verizon threatened to disconnect the company’s subscribers from its network, ultimately leading to the decision to file for bankruptcy.  Reports are also surfacing that the company owes Best Buy stores $8 million.

In the face if its creditors and Verizon’s still standing threat to shut off customers’ service, things don’t exactly look rosy for an Amp’d turnaround.  However, keep in mind that chapter 11 provides protection during a restructuring, which is exactly what Amp’d president Bill Stone has been talking about this week.  Also, consider that when you think about public perception, despite its warnings, Verizon is unlikely to shut off service for somewhere around 200,000 Amp’d subscribers.

The MVNO cell phone service operator model may not ultimately work for Amp’d, but it seems very possible that the company could emerge from bankruptcy as a mobile content provider.  Content has been the company’s primary value proposition, and it has found some success with proprietary content.  The company also says its customers (at these those that paid their bills) are avid consumers of content, which allows the company to claim an average revenue per user of $100 per month—a number which industry analysts agree is significantly higher than the average.

EBay Partners with Bid4Spots for Online Radio Auctions

6/6/07 – In a direct challenge to Google’s foray into media advertising sales, EBay is partnering up with Encino-based Bid4Spots to auction radio advertising time.  Bid4Spots hosts weekly auctions of remnant terrestrial radio and Internet radio ad time.

Founded in 2005, Bid4Spots claims that more than 2,300 radio stations now participate in its auctions.  The companies say the auctions will be available on the EBay Media Marketplace, where EBay has already begun a cable-television advertising sales program.

According to Bid4Spots, the site employs “reverse” auctions that allow radio stations to compete for advertisers’ dollars and bid ad rates down.

The Bid4Spots system and the start of the EBay auctions, which the companies say happens today, is a formidable potential competitor to Google Audio Ads, launched after the company’s purchase of dMarc Broadcasting, which had built a proprietary radio ad sales platform.

Bid4Spots was founded by radio ad veteran Dave Newmark, CEO of Newmark Advertising, also based in Encino.

MusicPlusTV Seeks to Create Next Generation Music TV Network

MusicPlusTV6/5/07 -With the rapid rise of online video destinations leading numerous startups to jump into the market, user-generated content has almost become the conventional approach.  But one Echo Park-based startup is bringing the phenomenon full-circle.  MusicPlusTV, founded in 2003 by entrepreneurs Marc Cubas and Dennis Tzeng, is creating a music-based online television network—complete with studios for original content production.

The company built the studios for the creation of professionally-produced programming, which serves as the centerpiece of its service.  While it does incorporate social networking and user generated content like the My Spaces and You Tubes of the world, the streaming “television” channel based on music is the real differentiator for MusicPlusTV.

“Because our video stream is 24 hours, we can mimic the passive experience of watching television while also offering all our content on-demand,” said Henry Goldman, business development director at the company.  “We can cater to whatever the user is looking for; if they want to put something on in the background while they get ready to go out on a Friday night, our stream is live, or if they want to relive their favorite bands performance from South by Southwest while killing time at work, all they have to do is search.”

The live television feed is streamed via Windows Media Player while the on-demand video content is served to users via a custom Flash player developed in-house.  Users are able to customize their video content through the use of embed codes that allow any piece of video to be posted on individual profile pages.  The company gives users space for 100 files each of videos, photos and audio with their free subscriptions.

While MusicPlusTV competes most directly in terms of business model with other “streaming network” companies like Denver-based Mania TV, the social aspects of the site puts the company in the difficult position of going head-to-head with other social networking businesses like My Space, You Tube, and their ever-growing list of competitors.  However, Goldman tells StartUp Beat that the company sees its approach as unique enough to provide a strong differentiator from the other social sites.

“In terms of YouTube, as well as other user-generated content sites, users don’t think of them as networks as much as portals, channels from which they can access the work of other networks and creators,” he said.  “By primarily focusing on original content, MusicPlusTV has established a brand that has at its core exclusive programming.  All it takes for a music fan to realize the value of our site is one visit, where they can see the breadth of our content library.”

Earlier this year, MusicPlusTV launched version 3.0 of its site, when the social networking and on-demand video hosting and archiving capabilities were added.  The company says its traffic has increased dramatically since then.

It also closed a funding round last November from South Bay-based Kenai Investments.  A company spokesperson said executives are currently talking to additional potential investors.

In addition to its platform at MusicPlusTV.com, the company also syndicates content to other online destinations, including Joost.  Goldman says that at least some of the company’s content can be found on most of the other major video sites.

Longer term, MusicPlusTV seems to be content with finding its niche in the online video universe, not conquering it.

“We have no plans to take over You Tube’s share of the market space,” said Goldman.  “But, if just one-in-ten of You Tube’s users who visit their site for music video content came to us instead, we could carve out a very healthy business.”

Newport Media Samples New Mobile TV Receiver Chip

6/4/07 – Newport Media, the Lake Forest-based fabless semiconductor company focused on the mobile broadcast media market, today announced it has begun customer sampling of a new mobile digital television receiver chip.

Called the Sundance NMI310, the company claims the single-chip receiver is the mobile television industry’s most highly integrated mobile TV solution.

Newport Media introduced its first two-chip solution last year and says it has continued to advance the technology in key areas including power consumption, RF performance and speed.

The company calls the single chip integration the “last major obstacle” in the development of its DVB-H standard digital video broadcasting solution that it says will provide customers with enhanced performance and a structural cost advantage.

The company says the chip is currently available in sample quantities and volume production is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of this year.

Amp’d Mobile Files for Chapter 11 Protection

6/4/07 – Los Angeles-based mobile service and entertainment provider Amp’d Mobile has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to a company statement released late Friday.  Founded in 2005 by wireless industry veteran Peter Adderton, the startup has gained significant attention in its attempt to build an entertainment-focused mobile company.

In its statement, Amp’d said that its “back-end infrastructure was unable to keep up with customer demand.”  It also indicated that it expects to continue normal operations and provide uninterrupted service to customers.

Amp’d operates in the mobile virtual network operator, or MVNO, space.  In a nutshell, MVNOs are resellers of basic mobile service, as they do not own their own wireless spectrum or network infrastructure, but offer enhanced services on top of the basic wireless service.

In Amp’d’s case, the focus is entertainment offerings aimed at the youth market, and the company seemed to gain significant momentum in this area with recent announcements involving original content on mobile video, and development deals with MTV Networks and and major Hollywood producers.  In addition, in March the company announced its expansion to Canada and Japan, and released a customized edition of the Motorola MOTO Q for Amp’d customers.

Amp’d has also been one of the most active fundraisers in the region, securing more than $360 million from a broad range of investors.  But recently, there have been indicators of turbulence at the company, beginning with an unannounced across-the-board price hike for its handsets, followed by rumors that Adderton had left the company, and infighting over the company’s direction.   However, according to the company’s statement, the management team remains intact, and there is no indication that Adderton has departed.

The bankruptcy filing will no doubt fuel further speculation about the viability of the MVNO business.  Amp’d and the other major Los Angeles-based MVNO, Helio, have been subject to much scrutiny since their founding, and the business model was previously attempted unsuccessfully by ESPN and Disney.

While the companies did not disclose the value of the acquisition, TechCrunch estimates the range to be between $15-$20 million.

6/1/07 – Los Angeles-based Oversee.net, an online media company in the domain and online marketing services businesses, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire SnapNames, operator of the largest available source of expired and deleting domain names.  The companies are not revealing the terms of the acquisition, but said it is expected to close by mid-June.

SnapNames, formed in 2000 and based in Portland, Oregon, provides what it says is the first commercially available technology for pre-ordering a currently registered domain name.

Oversee.net says the company’s senior management will continue to run SnapNames and its headquarters will remain in Portland.

Oversee owns several properties focused on the domain market, including DomainSponsor and Revenue.net.  CEO Lawrence Ng says the purchase will serve as “an important enhancement to Oversee’s capabilities in domain services.”

Oversee.net was established in 2000 by then 21-year-old Ng and Fred Hsu.
