Helio to Launch Enhanced 'UP' Service

6/29/07 – CrunchGear is reporting today that Westwood-based mobile telephony company Helio will announce an upgrade to its UP service next week.  The move coincides, of course, with the launch of Apple’s iPhone, which may prove to be Helio’s greatest challenge to date.

The UP service, to this point, has been a simple online storage service for photos and video taken by Helio members with their mobile devices.  CrunchGear reports the upgrade will allow users to upload photos from their devices directly to their Flickr accounts and send video straight to You Tube.

Helio, a mobile virtual network operator, has positioned itself to offer unique services that appeal to the youth market, a group that may be priced out of the iPhone phenomenon, and these new UP features only serve to strengthen that position.  The company’s recently-released Ocean dual slider smartphone has been widely lauded as a potential competitor to Apple’s latest game changer.

Helio was established by EarthLink and Boingo founder Sky Dayton, and is a joint investment of EarthLink and South Korea’s SK Telecom.

Language Weaver Signs German Reseller

6/29/07 – Language Weaver, the Los Angeles-based developer of software for automatic language translation, and Germany’s pi-consult across Solutions have signed a reseller and technology integration agreement.  Pi-consult is a certified reseller of language translation solutions company across Systems, which already has a partnership in place with Language Weaver.

Pi-consult will resell Language Weaver’s statistical machine translation technology integrated with across’s Language Server product, which includes a translation memory and terminology system as well as tools for project and workflow management.

Language Weaver says its statistical machine translation software offers an established solution and a departure from traditional complex, linguistics rule-based machine translation by producing fluent, natural sounding translations based on what it calls “statistical likelihoods.”  It is currently available for translation of 31 languages.

The software is able to learn automatically from existing translated documents to produce what Language Weaver calls the “highest probability translation output,” potentially saving customers time and money by automating the process of translating new documents, according to Language Weaver.

The company was founded in 2002 and is based on research and development done at the University of Southern California’s Information Sciences Institute.  It claims it has more than 50 patents pending on its technology.  The company also operates a subsidiary user-generated news web site, called Kontrib, which uses Language Weaver’s technology to automatically translate stories that are originally posted in multiple languages.

Interneer Awarded Patent for Instant Application Platform

6/27/07 – Los Angeles-based Interneer, creator of the Instant Application Platform, or IAP, which it says allows companies to configure web-based applications with integrated workflow without programming, said today it has been awarded a U.S. patent for its technology.

The patent, entitled “Knowledge Management System and Method,” defines the IAP as a knowledge management system that automatically determines the manner in which to capture data as it is initially entered, ensuring all corresponding data will be captured in the same format in the future.  This methodology provides a structure for creating user-defined workflows, templates and tables built upon stored and collected data, according to Interneer.

The company says that using its IAP, businesses can design, configure and deploy scalable, reliable solutions through an intuitive point and click environment, hosted online or installed on-site, allowing application and workflow processes to be configured without supplementary tools or products.

Earlier this month, Interneer announced that it had received an investment of $2 million from GroundWork Equity.  At the same time, GroundWork’s founding and managing partner Michael Edell was named CEO.

Bid4Spots Gives Public Support to Internet Radio Broadcasters

6/26/07 – Encino-based Bid4Spots, the online auction of radio advertising time, has taken a public stand “in solidarity” with Internet broadcasters as part of the industry’s response to the threat to Internet radio due to royalty rate increases set by the Copyright Royalty Board.  Today has been designated by Internet broadcasters as a “Day of Silence,” designed to call attention to the fact that as a result of the Board’s action, royalties for Internet broadcasters are scheduled to move from a per-song rate to a per-listener rate starting July 15th, significantly increasing costs for online broadcasters.

Major Internet stations like Yahoo! LAUNCHcast, Rhapsody, and Pandora.com are expected to silence their streams today along with other participants like KCRW, Live365, MTV Online, Radioio, Radio Paradise, AccuRadio and independent online broadcasters.

In a statement, Bid4Spots CEO Dave Newmark said: “Although Bid4Spots doesn’t have a stream to silence, we want the industry to know we stand with the broadcasters in their fight to save Internet radio.  As a business we’re looking forward to getting this issue resolved, so we can all get back to what we like to do – which, for us, is helping broadcasters generate advertising revenue.”

Besides being an important issue for Bid4Spots’ business, as the company conducts auctions for both offline and online broadcasting, Newmark and his staff are bona fide radio industry veterans.  In fact, the company says that Rockie Thomas, who manages Bid4Spots’ Internet Radio division, is an independent broadcaster and will be participating by silencing her stream today.

More information about the issue and the Day of Silence can be found at www.kurthanson.com, and www.savenetradio.org.

Amp’d Mobile’s Lifeline Extended

6/22/07 – Amp’d Mobile will be allowed to use $7.5 million in cash collateral from Verizon Wireless to keep its mobile virtual network provider, or MVNO, phone service running, a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge ruled this week.

The judge’s sign off allows Amp’d to keep the service running through June 25.  The ruling requires Amp’d Mobile to set aside $2.45 million as a reserve, to be used only with Verizon’s written approval.

Verizon had originally demanded payment from Amp’d for its mobile network services on the threat of a shutdown just before Amp’d filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy.  Reports indicate that Amp’d owes Verizon about $33 million.

As a result, Amp’d has filed suit against Verizon Wireless, seeking a court order that bars the company from terminating Amp’d from its network.

Reports have circulated widely of overspending at Amp’d, which had raised around $360 million in venture funding, leading up to its bankruptcy.  Founder and CEO Peter Adderton left the company in the wake of the filing.

LogicalApps Turns Sarbanes-Oxley Challenges into Opportunity

6/15/07 – Sarbanes-Oxley requirements have created challenges for companies of all types and LogicalApps logosizes.  And the management team at Irvine-based LogicalApps has turned those challenges into opportunity in helping companies automate the process of Sarbanes-Oxley, or SOX, compliance.

LogicalApps provides solutions that help companies automate the checks and balances that take place in organizations to ensure that business transactions and financial reports are accurate, meet corporate policies and adhere to government regulations.

According to Chris Capdevila, co-founder and current vice president of strategy and corporate development, LogicalApps was not originally started to address Sarbanes-Oxley specifically, but as corporate scandals like Enron and WorldCom unfolded, the demand for greater regulatory oversight grew exponentially, and the company’s evolution followed suit.

“I spent eight years helping companies to rip out custom financial applications that they spent millions of dollars on and that fit their business perfectly but they couldn’t scale,” said Capdevila, formerly a senior consultant at Price Waterhouse.  “So they were replaced with commercial ERP (enterprise resource planning) applications that could handle massive workloads but couldn’t support their business processes without extensive customization.  For all the functionality they had gained, they lost a lot of flexibility and control.”

Capdevila says that he and co-founder Paul Brunskow, saw this problem as a glaring hole in the ERP market and in 2000 established LogicalApps to address it.  Since then, Capdevila and team have adapted to changing markets and established a solid business in an industry with huge growth potential.

John Hagerty, vice president and research fellow at AMR Research, says that the company has established a strong foundation for future growth, due to the two-pronged approach of its flagship ACTIVE Governance software.

“When LogicalApps originally introduced the ACTIVE Governance solution, it was significantly out in front of other vendors in the market because it was one of the first to deliver both a framework for scope of work as well as active monitory of security and process in one package,” said Hagerty.  “Others have followed this path now, but LogicalApps’ execution is more mature.”

The company targets its marketing efforts to what it sees as the four key constituencies within an organization—internal audit, finance, IT and the chief compliance, or risk, office.

“Our marketing efforts are targeted to those four stakeholders, each of which shares a common goal to ensure that corporate and regulatory guidelines are being followed with the least possible burden to the business,” said Carla Fitzgerald, senior vice president of marketing.  “There are a variety of industry events focused on compliance and risk, which we participate in as presenters and sponsors, and we also use vehicles such as webinars and seminars to educate the market on the value of embedding policy enforcement into their core business systems.”

The strategy seems to be working.  LogicalApps currently counts more than 300 customers, which break down roughly as 60 percent public companies, 30 percent private and 10 percent government agencies, according to CEO Jim Zierick, who joined the firm in February.

“We’ve seen that our solution is embraced by large organizations such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Qualcomm, Visa and Fidelity National Financial, to name a few, as well as smaller organizations who really appreciate that they are able to derive business value from automating their governance initiatives,” said Zierick.

The company’s success has not gone unnoticed.  In 2005, LogicalApps received the “Emerging Star” designation in the Deloitte & Touche Technology Fast 50 program, and Capdevila was named "Software Entrepreneur of the Year" by the Software Council of Southern California in the same year.

A key ongoing challenge for the company is to overcome the “let’s wait” option with potential clients or companies that either try to manage their compliance programs through inefficient office productivity tools like Excel and Word or simply suffer from institutional inertia.  In addition, the company cites competition in the governance, risk and compliance, or GRC, market that comes not only from other smaller providers, but from the risk advisors with whom they partner.

But Capdevila sees opportunity in this situation.  “A significant element of our marketing strategy is to partner with them—companies such as Price Waterhouse Coopers, KPMG, Ernst & Young—to expose the advantages of automation to our target audience,” he said.  “These firms are building extensive practices around GRC, helping companies to improve business processes while meeting their compliance requirements, and they are often contracted to evaluate and implement automated solutions for GRC on behalf of the customers.”

Capdevila says that almost every leading risk advisory firm has identified LogicalApps as a premier offering for the Oracle market and are sending consultants at the rate of 30-to-40 per quarter to get trained on the company’s ACTIVE Governance software.

LogicalApps is backed by Sequoia Capital and Mission Ventures.
